Describe the importance of a homeroom community and identify the important rules and values of the homeroom community
Identify our role in the homeroom community
A homeroom at school is similar to a unique family.
Our homeroom consists of all the students in our division and we share the same teacher and classroom.
It feels like we have a small school family because we spend time with each other every day, receive information related to school events, engage in community-building activities together and learn together1.
1. Why is it Important?
Our homeroom is an important element of our school experience because -
Homeroom is a place of belongingness for all the students in our division. We feel accepted and respected, It is similar to a family at our school.
It encourages us to feel connected and supported.
Together, as a team, we learn new things and grow as terrific learners2!
Our homeroom teacher acts as a supportive mentor.
It is where we begin our school every day.
We meet our peers and classmates and exchange stories, celebrate events and do fun activities together.
It helps us to feel safe and at ease2.

Examples of essential values are kindness, honesty, and helping others3.
1. Why Are They Important?
Values are important to us because -

Values help us build good relationships and get along with others3.
2. What Are the Values of our Homeroom Community?
There are six main values that we all follow in our homeroom community, and they help us outside of school as well. They are -
We use our rules that are our homeroom agreements to put our values into action.
Example: We Do The Right Thing respecting one and another, respecting the school property and become responsible for our learning.
“Doing The Right Thing” is our Value which we can put into action by following our homeroom rules/agreements!
Rules are a natural part of life; having rules helps us learn how to deal with different situations.
Rules give us a foundation to know what behaviour is expected of us at home, school, and with our peers4.
Who makes the rules?
At home, parents or adults make rules that help us to fulfil our tasks and get time to play, eat and rest.
At our school, teachers and students get together to decide the homeroom rules or agreements.
Some rules are made by our government and law enforcement, such as traffic rules, airport rules and rules in other public spaces. Community workers such as Police Officers, Security Guards and others help us to follow these rules.
1. Why are Rules Important?
Rules are important because -
Safety: They keep us safe by letting us know what are safe ways to behave. For example, in order to avoid getting hurt, we have rules of not running in the corridors.
Fairness: Rules make sure that each person is treated equally. Everyone benefits when everyone follows the same set of rules.
Respect: Following the rules shows that we respect the people around us and care for their emotions5.
What happens if there are no rules?
We might feel unsafe and we may not know what to do!
2. What are The Rules of Our Homeroom community?
The three main rules of our homeroom community are -
There would be chaos
People would not know what to do
Nobody would know their responsibilities
Everyone would make their own rules
